Bucharest 2021 OPEN LAB is a platform that challenges Bucharest residents to become active participants in the life of the city through experimental cultural projects addressed to communities, big or small. During April-September 2016, we explore individual and collective imagination through a range of tools specifically designed to generate collaborative projects that foresee the future of the city, transformed by creativity. There is an opportunity that Bucharest could join the list of cities that were granted the title of European Capital of Culture for a year in 2021. The competition for electing the city to represent Romania started in December 2014. Along Bucharest, candidate cities number Alba Iulia, Arad, Bacău, Baia Mare, Brașov, Brăila, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iași, Sfântu Gheorghe, Suceava, Timișoara, Târgu Mureș. The European Capital of Culture (ECoC) title means more than a festival, a display of artists, or a temporary revitalization of the city. It is a large-scale project that brings the role of culture and of sustainable manners in which it could contribute to the prosperity of citizens and the city into question.
